Couture And The Red Linen Dress V8022 – OOP Part 1

Hello Everyone,

Well this has definitely been a crafty summer for me.  I’ve enjoyed knitting and a free motion quilting workshop with Amanda Murphy.  But very little garment sewing has taken place.  Fall is around the corner (I hope), I have an upcoming tropical vacation and a wedding.  I need cloths for all occasions.  It’s time to get moving.

First up is OOP V8022.  This pattern has been in my queue for ages but never took the time to find the right fabric.  I have a red heather linen in my stash since the beginning of time.  I can’t remember the store I purchased it from.  But if I had to guess, I would say fabric.com.  I went through a linen purchasing thing with them some time ago. The fabric is perfect for this dress.

Now, linen is one of my favorite fabrics and I also enjoy couture sewing techniques.  I underline and line most of my linen dresses.   My go to underlining is silk organza, but lately I have been exploring with cotton voile.  It’s hard to find 54-55 wide silk organza without breaking the bank for bulk yardage.  However, recently I found out that Dharama Trading Co  sells white 55 wide silk organza for $6.69/yd. (1-9yds)  From reading the reviews, many sewist are happy with the quality.  So, I’m going to give it a try.

Back to the dress…..I made a few adjustments to the pattern.  I added a FBA, increased the width of the hips area a tad and a sway back adjustment.  I fitted and cut my fabric pieces roughly 2 weeks ago. But needed to block out time for some hand sewing.  So Sunday was my day for handing sewing underlining and interfacing to the fabric pieces.  Like knitting, I find handing sewing very relaxing.  I think it’s the rhythmic movement of the hands.  I don’t know, I just like it.

My goal this week/weekend is to get the dress sewn to the lining task.  If you follow me in Instagram, I’m behind in my knitting homework for a beginners sweater class I’m taking.  Knitting the body of this sweater is giving me the blues.  I have made some crazy mistakes that has caused me to rip back twice. Oh well, it’s how we learn. (BTW….that is not working this time, but it sounds good.) The bottom line is that I’m enjoying it all.  Stay tuned to see how it all turns out next week.

Until next time……….have an awesome and crafty week!!
