Color Blocking With V8871

Thoughts From the sewing room: When I enter my sewing room, the first thing I do is turn on the TV.  I will either catch up on the items I have recorded or listen to music.  However, lately I have been sewing in complete quietness. It’s not something that was intentional, it just happened. I find that I enjoy creating in quietness.

oops!!! Little of slip is showing.

First, I would like to thank everyone for all the nice comments on my red dress. They are greatly appreciated.

This is another dress that is out of my comfort zone.  I have been wanting to do a color block dress for awhile. I was going threw my stash and pulled out this ITY knit.  My  first thought was a maxi dress. But as I kept looking at it, V8871 just came to mind.  Then, I thought this would be a good opportunity to color block with a print and a solid. This is different for me. I would noramlly pick  solids. I wasn’t sure, but decided to go for it.

As I begin making this dress, I wasn’t sure how it was going to look. I also wasn’t sure that I would like it.  But after I completed the dress, I have to say I love it!!!  Here are the details.

Pattern Description: Close-fitting, flared, pullover dress has seam detail and narrow hem. B: cut on crosswise grain

Fabric: ITY print knit and black rayon jersey. Both from fabric.com

Pattern Adjustments: I cut this pattern in 18 around the neckline, 20 in the shoulders and arms, them graded to a 24 in the hips. I shorten the pattern an inch and made a sway back adjustment. Since I was using a knit, I decide not to make a FBA.

Sewing Details: This dress is very simple to put together.  There are only four pattern pieces and no zipper.  I only added a few items.  I used clear elastic to stabilize the shoulders. To keep with the simplicity of the pattern, I choose to finish the neck and arms with black folder over elastic. Last instead of a 5/8 inch narrow hem, I turned up the hem and use steam-a-hem. To me with the print it looked better.

Conclusion: Vogue V8871 is a great pattern. A simple yet sophisticated dress.  This is the type of dress that  you can grab and go.  I will definitely make this dress again.  I thinking about a fall version.

July was a good sewing month. I completed three garments.  Tomorrow, I was post on my pants and top.
In my last post, I mention that I was going to make a pair of shorts.  But I have to say, I have lost the desire.  I think Fall is creeping into my mind. However, I do have few more dresses I want to make. But they are more transitional garments. Well that’s all for now.
Unitl next time……..keep sewing!!
